The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Like Clockwork

"When he pulls a knife, you pull a kid's plastic lightsaber.  THAT's the University of Chicago way!"

So the Senate voted 53-36 to only extend tax cuts to those making under $250K.  Which in America it means it failed.  DEMOCRACY!

Meanwhile, unemployment insurance runs out soon.

So, the GOP will run out the clock on this issue.  They will get what they want, which is tax cuts for millionaires, but that's really only part of their agenda.  They want Obama to look weak.  They want him to accumulate losses so he looks weak.  They have perfected the politics of the bitchslap.

Welcome to the next two years.

What will be interesting to see what happens with other important pieces of legislation.  There's START, DADT repeal and some sort of extension of unemployment insurance (probably).  It will be interesting to see if they get passed or whether the Party of No has simply become reflexive in their actions.
