The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

The Rugged Individual

It ought to be amusing watching the various Trumpist sycophants rationalize the Mad King's whims on tariffs, except this is going to tip us into a recession, if we aren't in one already. Watching the markets yesterday rally on rumors that Trump was open for negotiation, only to see him pull the rug out from them - again - would seem to be a pattern here. What's more, I simply don't think this is a negotiating ploy. This fucking guy really loves tariffs, because he's a fucking idiot.

As Richardson notes, there is a heavy reliance on the idea of rugged individualism in regards to not needing government programs. This idea was part of Reagan's rhetorical attacks on "big government." A lot of this is heavily gendered, too. (This does not exclude women from supporting Trump, obviously.) This whole focus on "manufacturing" is about manly men doing manly things

This whole retrograde tariff nonsense is...nonsense. But it also represents the continued war on women. College? Too womanly. Who did Trump beat? Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. Which women does he have in his inner circle? Ones who have a certain generic "hotness."

The "rugged individual" is inherently coded male. White Women should be more pissed...
