The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Ryan-Rand

James Fallows says that picking Ryan will mean a more substantive campaign as we pivot away from Bain/taxes.

Maybe, but the plan was always to pivot away from Bain/taxes.  Bain/taxes were simply to set Mitt up as someone so out of touch with the common American experience that he would embrace something as radical as the Ryan budget.

Now, Mitt has wedded himself firmly to a plan to turn Medicare into vouchers, slash spending and give massive tax cuts to the rich.

That was ALWAYS the substance of the race.
