The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

It Still Hurts

I'm watching the reading of names at Ground Zero.

And I start crying.

Ten years.

Thing Two walked in and asked what was going on.  He's very bright, very empathetic.  But luckily he can't feel this.

Our students don't feel it as much either.  It was a scary moment, I guess for the 4 to 8 year olds.  But that immediate, confusing, angry, visceral pain doesn't belong to them.

I hope nothing like it ever will.
