The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Next!

Josh Marshall has a good question that I had been mulling all morning.

With Perry flaming out, who becomes the next anti-Romney?  All the cool kids in the GOP want it to be Christie, but he seems wisely to decide on sitting it out.  But unless Perry rights his ship quickly the GOP will have to find someone narcissistic enough to run for President, but conservative enough to appeal to the solid majority of GOP voters who hate Romney.

I would think it would have to be a Southern governor like McDonnell of Virginia, but who really knows?
