The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Unvirtuous Cycle

Booman has a nice little piece about how the GOP has basically created a self-reinforcing cycle of bad behaviors that will be very difficult to break.  Sentient politicians understand that killing Obama's job bill dead will not play well back in the districts.  This is precisely why Obama is out in those districts stumping for the bill.

But since they have literally become reflexive in their opposition to anything Obama wants to do (that idea that all of modern conservatism is based on being transgressive), they will find it hard to pivot to being responsible legislators.

There are probably enough votes in the House to pass something close to the President's bill, if it was simply taken on the merits.  But I doubt there are enough GOP members willing to buck not only the Teatard base, but also their own previous statements.  And I certainly don't think Boehner has the acumen to shepherd this thing through to completion.
