The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Herman Cain, Not A Rapist!

Herman Cain puts his A move on the lady dinosaur.

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/fourth-accuser-urges-herman-cain-come-clean-harassment-193541143.html

So, a registered Republican comes forward and talks about how Herman Cain groped her when she came to him looking for a job recommendation.  When she objected, Herman did not full on rape her, merely sexually assaulting her which is a like assault and battery is to murder.

Here's where I see the conservative defense of Cain coming down.

First, the woman hired Gloria Allred, so she's clearly a gold-digger or a bitch or something.  I had no idea who Gloria Allred is until an incident this summer involving the Braves pitching coach shouting slurs and obscenities at a family in the stands.  The vitriol directed towards her was impressive.  I can see why, she's the sort of abrasive plaintiff's lawyers that people find odious.  Despite the fact that this woman is not apparently asking for money, she will be depicted as a gold-digger by conservative media.

Second, the fact that Cain didn't full on rape this woman and only sexually assaulted her means that this is "all a big misunderstanding".  Despite the fact that Cain clearly wanted to exchange sex for a job recommendation, this isn't rape so it's not a big deal.

Every other year, we have sexual harassment training.  It lasts a few hours; it's tedious; it's often redundant.

But there are some things one does not do.  It's against the law.  This much I have learned.  Learned it in the first 20 minutes of a three hour session, but still - I got it.  Not a hard thing to learn, really.

Herman Cain in particular and conservatives in general have not accepted the validity of sexual harassment law.  They are effectively nullifying it in public opinion.

Nevertheless, we now have a (white) woman coming forward and talking about Cain groping her genitals.  Even among wingnuts, this will leave a mark and Cain's support is already slipping.

This weekend, Cain and Gingrich had a cordial "debate" in Texas where they basically agreed on a bunch of things.  And because it was unmoderated, Gingrich couldn't spend his time flinging pooh at the media personality asking the "stupid questions".  People said it was a non-event.  I see Gingrich trying to siphon off Cain's supporters as he enters his death spiral.

Anyway, Newt's above 10% in the polls.

It would be appropriate if the Grinch becomes the GOP flavor of the month in December.
