The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Some Good News

Abraham Capuchin is shocked at what has happened to his party.

There were three big ballot initiatives up for grabs tonight.

In Maine, there was an effort to limit same day voter registration.  It failed.

In Mississippi, there was an effort to define a zygote as a human being.  It failed.

In Ohio, there was an effort to strip public employee unions of collective bargaining rights.  It failed.

There is plenty of bad news for Democratic candidates in places like the VA state senate.

But it's worth remembering that the GOP is usually on the wrong side of the issues.  They run better campaigns, but the suck at governing.

UPDATE: Josh Marshall makes the point that what connects all these results is that they are a rejection of GOP overreach and the margins are not even close.  One wonders what effect this will have on the GOP in Washington.
