Blog Credo

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Walking Dead Liveblog

Missed the first airing.  How can they show that stuff at 9pm?  Saw Hell on Wheels.  Not getting much of a feel for it.  I agree with TNC that having the protagonist as a "noble slaveholder" is terribly revisionist.  Also, he can't act.  That's probably more important long term.

Carl has taken on the role of the "reason to survive".

Shane showing some cunning.  Interesting development.  He's been all reaction and emotion.  If he learns cunning...

Herschel has a seeecret!  (Hint: It's in the barn...)

(Yup, in the barn.)

I love Dale.  Hope he doesn't get bit.

The Swimming Dead?  Time to call Aquaman!

Herschel is going to be a great influence on the show.

Fishing for zombies?  Awesome!

Also a fan of Glenn as comic relief.

Ensemble shows are usually credited to the actors - and the actors here are good - but really it's the creation of great characters that makes it work.  The ability to go from Dale's warmth to Glenn's humor to Daryl's bad assitude to Rick's nobility to Lori's feral maternal impulse to...

Oh, man.  That was gross.  And a nice line to T-Dog.  That's the way to keep a show built on ensemble working.  Make all of them interesting.

Um, where the hell is Sophia?

Shane opens up.  Scarier than when he's killing people.

Glenn remains hilarious.

And remarkably lucky.

"Some men do not earn the love of their sons."  Um, something got in my eye.

Daryl shows depth.  And a bit of book learning.

Carl is smarter than his dad.

Wow, something else got in my eye.

Part of this story is clearly Rick's transformation.  He starts as everything a man should be: humble, decent, strong, brave.  He becomes what he has to be to survive this, and that might not always be decent.  Putting away the badge is a big moment.

There is something bizarre about the fact that even after the zombie apocalypse a home pregnancy test would still work.  I mean, of course it would, but... odd.

Oh!  Merle makes an appearance in the preview.  When will Morgan come back?
